Source: NTUC Income (the following information is specifically compiled based on NTUC Drivo Policy, but it is similar to other insurer's policy as well. please refer to your own insurance policy documents for exact terms and conditions)
1. What is the benefit of naming additional drivers in the private car policy?
By naming the additional drivers in the policy, you will pay a premium that reflects the risk profiles of the drivers. The
named drivers will enjoy the same excess as the owner and will not be
subject to the higher excess imposed on unnamed drivers.
2. How many named drivers can I include in my policy?
Besides the owner, you are allowed to include up to two named drivers in your policy. If you are not driving you should include the name and details of the primary driver. With the primary driver you can still include two additional named drivers.
3. Is it compulsory to have named drivers when applying for a policy?
It
is not compulsory to name drivers but if there are persons who use your
car frequently, we encourage that you name them in your policy. You will benefit by not having to pay the higher excess that will apply to unnamed drivers.
4. What is the excess imposed on an unnamed driver who uses my car and is involved in an accident?
When you make a claim under your policy, a further excess in addition to the standard excess will apply as follows:
(the amount varies from different insurers)
|
Unnamed Driver
|
Further Excess
|
|
Age 26 years and below or less than 1 year driving experience
|
$2,500
|
|
Age above 26 years
|
$500

5. Do I have to pay more when I name drivers in my policy?
The premium of your policy is calculated based on the profiles of the owner and the named drivers. The premium can be the same, lower or higher depending on the risk profiles of the named drivers.
6. Does the option to name drivers apply to third party fire and theft (TPFT) and third party (TP) covers also?
Yes. It is important to disclose relevant information in your application so that the risks can be assessed correctly. By
naming drivers who frequently use your car, you will pay premium rates
that reflect the risk profiles of the drivers more accurately.
7. Are there any conditions in naming drivers, i.e. must they be family members?
The named drivers that you opt to include in your policy must be those, besides yourself, who use your car often. Therefore, it is not restricted to family members only.
8.
Will I be allowed to include / change named drivers after I have taken
up the policy? If so, will there be additional premium charged?
We encourage you to submit the choice of your named drivers at the time of application. In case you omitted this, we will allow you to include them later without any charge for the first time.
However,
if you decide subsequently to add another named driver or change the
named driver(s) after the issuance of the policy an administrative fee
of $25 (before GST) will be imposed for each change.
You can avoid paying the administrative fee by adding / changing named drivers at the time of renewal. As for additional premium being charged, it depends on the risk profiles of the named drivers.
9. Will there be any refund if I change named driver(s) with a better risk profile?
Yes,
we will give you a refund on the difference in premium less the
administrative fee of $25 (before GST) for a change in the named
driver(s) with a better risk profile.
10. How will the No Claim Discount (NCD) entitlement be affected with named drivers?
The NCD entitlement will follow the owner and not the named drivers.
11. When will I be allowed to have named drivers in my policy?
All new policies issued from 1st December 2008 onwards will have the option to name drivers. As for renewals, the option is available from 1st February 2009.
