Tenet was founded in 1957 under the name The People's Insurance Company Limited. In the 1980's the company became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hwa Hong Corporation Limited, which is today a diversified business group listed on the Singapore Exchange with shareholders' funds exceeding S$500 million.

In 1997, The Hartford International Financial Services Group in the United States acquired a major stake in the company intending to use it as a springboard for their Asian expansion. The name was then changed to The Hartford Insurance Company (S) Limited and the company advanced exponentially as it benefited from the managerial, operational and IT expertise of its new parent.

When Hartford International shifted its business focus in 2001, Hwa Hong re-acquired its former subsidiary a year later so as to carry on where Hartford International left off. This resulted in the birth of Tenet.
   
Today, Tenet provides a broad spectrum of general insurance products and services ranging from personal insurance for individuals and families, to business insurance for companies.

Tenet is also the first NATAS approved travel insurer (The current NATAS approved travel insurer is AIG) and first travel insurer to shorten the claim for Baggage Delay, Travel Delay and Flight Deviation from 12 hours to 6 hours. They are also one of the first to have Full Terrorism coverage and Unlimited coverage for Emergency Evacuation. Tenet was honoured as the Best Insurance Company (ASEAN) 2008 and the first Runner Up for Best Claims Service (ASEAN) 2008 by SIBA (Singapore Insurance Brokers' Association) at their biennial Conference and Gala Dinner event held on 8th May 2008.
